We are a family of winegrowers and, for over 150 years, we have been passionately devoted to the cultivation of Nebbiolo. This is a rare grape variety that, over the centuries, has adapted to the Valtellina, a land like no other, where everything is still done by hand. For 5 generations we have always waited for “the time it takes” “the right waiting time” and it is this that sets the pace of our work. Time and humility are what make our wine the purest, sincerest expression of this land and of the people who cultivate it with such dedication. This was the lesson we were taught by our father Arturo, without letting ourselves be influenced by passing fashions and conventional tastes. We are convinced that the outstanding qualities of Chiavennasca ( Nebbiolo ) from the Alps means it is more than worthy of its place of honour on the international market of fine wines. Without this worldwide acknowledgement, this age-old activity would simply not be economically sustainable for it rejects any idea of modern mass-production.

The Valtellina is a valley of glacial origin, furrowed by the river Adda, which runs for a full 120 kilometres from east to west, from the Stelvio Pass to Lake Como. Embraced in between the Alpi Retiche and Orobie, it runs parallel to chain of the Alps and enjoys a unique microclimate. From dawn to sunset, the sun warms the terraced vineyard, which is set like a precious stone on the Rhaetian slope, fully exposed to the south and soothed by the cool breeze from the north. Dry-stone walls hold back poor soils composed of flaked granite, where, since time immemorial, the root of the Nebbiolo from the Alps vine has found all the nutrients it needs to create a genetic variability that is unsurpassed. Ermanno Olmi, with great sensitivity and poetic inspiration, described in a documentary film what it is like to live and work on the Rupi del Vino.
The spectacle of the terraced vineyards of the Valtellina is the heritage of mountain folk who have tended them for centuries, and it is a priceless treasure that deserves to be protected as a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At ARPEPE, even innovation has to respect the concept of “the right waiting time”: evolution is not a matter of fleeting fashions, for it has to respond to the need for constant improvement of every aspect of production.
We have indeed introduced a number of improvements in vineyard management, in order to improve the quality of the grapes, making the work of the winegrowers both simpler and more effective. Gentle Simonit&Sirch pruning, light battery-powered Pellenc tools and the use of small harvesting boxes are just some examples of the constant attention we pay to the professional advancement and health of our young people.
With the help of an helicopter, we installed a cable car in the Rocce Rosse vineyard to transport the grapes down into the valley. Similar structures were used a hundred years ago, but making one today, in compliance with all the safety regulations, was a task of rare complexity.
Even though it was built in 1973, the underground cellar at Buon Consiglio is perfectly integrated into the terraced slope of the Grumello. It was made using what were advanced solutions for the time and its special architectural structure allows for natural moisture and temperature control, which is essential for proper ageing. Also the new reception and tasting premises, designed by the architect Enrico Massimino and opened on the 150th anniversary of the business, adopt the latest ideas on environmental impact. Our guests can now look out over the vineyards and rocks of the Grumello, experiencing a wonderful sensation of being in two worlds, both indoors and out.

在 Rocce Rosse 葡萄園,我們甚至利用直升機協助安裝了一條纜索運輸系統(cable car),將採收的葡萄從山坡運送到山谷。類似的結構在一百年前就曾被使用,但在今日依照所有安全規範重新建造,卻是一項極其複雜的工程。

Farming the slope would seem unlikely — downright crazy, even — but somehow they make it work.
In Europe, there is an organization called CERVIM that is devoted to the preservation of mountain viticulture. (Each year, they have an "International Congress on Mountain and Steep-Slopes Viticulture" ... these are my kind of people). CERVIM has put a formal definition on heroic viticulture that is handy. The first measure for heroic viticulture is the steepness of the slope. Vineyards that require terracing just to defy gravity are a clear hallmark of heroic viticulture — think of Valtellina in Italy, or the Côte Rôtie in France. Terracing alone is not required. The vines of Cartizze and Valdobbiadene grow on very steep pitches, but the root systems hold much of the hillside
Although they have helicopters and cable cars to help them transport grapes into the valley, they still need to be moved manually for maximum efficiency.The tools they carry on their backs are handmade. It is especially hard to walk on the steep wall. Their courage and hard work are admired and honored!

然而,這些英雄式葡萄園以及在其中工作的酒莊,其實始終面臨著威脅。它們的存在本身就十分脆弱。之所以能夠延續至今,唯一的原因,是因為它們能釀造出極具表現力、令人驚嘆的葡萄酒。
正因如此,這些葡萄園與釀酒人,理應被好好地讚頌與珍惜。

The Rosso di Valtellina DOC from ARPEPE first saw the light in 2003, after a sweltering summer that had put our vines and our winegrowers sorely to the test. It would not have been fair to demean all their hard work by selling off the grapes, which were unsuitable for making a vintage wine. The choice came naturally: what might have had little value in the distant future could be given great dignity when young. The Rosso di Valtellina thus acquired a free and light-hearted personality, even though its elder siblings, more serious and refined, feared it might not last for years.

Arpepe Valtellina Superiore DOCG Il Pettirosso

The pettirosso (robin redbreast) can be found everywhere in the woods that now look down on the Valtellina, which was once under vine far higher up. Robins rarely enter the cellar, but that day one came in and alighted on an old wooden barrel, as if warning us of something. A few days later, while she was tasting the wine, Isabella noticed there was a slight leak from one of the acacia staves.The wine ap peared to be ready for bottling, but the barrel unfortunately needed replacing. There wasn’t enough to warrant a new label so she and Emanuele chose a few barrels of that ’97 – the most mature – and it became Il Pettirosso.
Pettirosso(知更鳥)在瓦爾泰利納周圍的森林中隨處可見。這些森林俯瞰著山谷,而在過去,葡萄園其實曾延伸到更高的山坡之上。

Valtellina Superiore Sassella Stella Retica DOCG – it’s almost a tongue twister, but then so too is the first sip: tense enough to capture and still astonish you, yet smooth enough not to catch you unprepared. Long maceration can do wonders also for young wines, which year after year will amaze you with their innate ability to evolve. The correct ripening of the grapes means doing everything at exactly the right time, weather permitting. This means that grapes, even from the same vineyard, will always be the outcome of countless variables that people can only partly influence. This is the part that we, with our innate passion, like to refer to as our “work”.
天梯酒莊⽡爾泰利纳優級雪绒花红葡萄酒這個名字幾乎像是一段繞口令,但第一口酒也同樣如此:張力十足,足以抓住你的感官並帶來驚喜,卻又圓潤順滑,不會讓人措手不及。

Arpepe Valtellina Superiore DOCG Grumello Rocca De Piro

Castel Grumello, the property of the De Piro family in the fourteenth century, is a twin fortress, consisting of two separate complexes once joined by walls, overlooking the hill with Nebbiolo from the Alps vineyards.
It gives its name to this wine, which is made with grapes from the two company-owned vineyards in the Grumello area. In years when low levels of tannins suggest brief ageing in large barrels, the Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro DOCG is always surprising for the speed with which it becomes ready to drink. And from the moment it makes its debut on the table, it is always on the spot: ready to drink, but also perfect for ageing with the reserves in the cellar.

The Valtellina Superiore Inferno Fiamme Antiche DOCG speaks to us of granitic rock heated in the sun, soaring up into the air like a flame, filling our nostrils with its heady fragrance.
The warmth is the secret of the perfect ripening of the grapes, which come exclusively from steep, sun-drenched slopes in the municipality of Poggiridenti.
A Nebbiolo with finely textured tannins and a lively freshness, with a bouquet of Alpine herbs and of the earth it comes from. Its colour recalls a true Maranello red, but the steep Arboleé road, which from the third curve of the “Inferno Circuit”, leads to the vineyard, is apparently not suited to racing cars.
Valtellina Superiore Inferno Fiamme Antiche DOCG 向我們訴說著被陽光炙熱的花崗岩岩壁,彷彿火焰般直衝天際,並以濃郁迷人的香氣充滿整個感官。

This is how we remember Arturo, when he stubbornly decided to create his Riserva right in the heart of Sassella. He completely renewed the vineyard at 400 metres above sea level, which he had inherited from his father, and decided to produce a wine that could be make only with Nebbiolo from the Alps grapes, which they simply called Chiavennasca in those days. The year was 1984. Six years later, he decided the time had come to find a name for it and he and his wife Giovanna opted for Rocce Rosse. The colour of these “red rocks” was that of the passion that fired him to search for the bloody, iron-like flavour of the land of his ancestors, so indelibly impressed on his memory that no flash of modernity could ever have changed. And indeed, in a glass of Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva Rocce Rosse DOCG you can relish the flavour of a root that challenge the granite with its elegance and sincerity, while a gentle breeze rises up from Lake Como and refreshes the valley.

Close to the Rocce Rosse, the “New Queen” rises to over 450 metres, as far as the road that leads from Sant’Anna to Triasso. There seems to be more rock than earth in this vineyard and here we have kept the greatest number of old vines: a collection of ancient genes that, in the best years, create one of the longest-lasting, most precious Riserva, as only a completely manual process can give. 1991 was an amazing vintage but it’s harder to find one today on a restaurant wine list than it is to meet the Queen herself.

Arpepe, Valtellina Superiore Reserva DOCG Sassella Ultimi Raggi

This wine, born in 1999 from an Arturo's idea, plays on the slightly drying of the grapes in the vineyards, up to 600 meters above sea level, at the highest point of Sassella, in the zone called "Ere". The right waiting time to reach the right degree of phenolic ripening of the grapes can take some weeks later than in the vineyards below. The variations in temperature between day and night during the harvest add strength to the skins and concentrate the sugars. The fruit slowly dries in the wind, while still attached to the vine, as it prepares for its winter rest. Just before the snow comes, between the middle and end of November, the grapes are picked, gently crushed and pressed in a wooden vat. At the first racking, it is completely dry and acidity levels are quite pronounced. The super-ripeness mitigates the nervous tannins of Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva Ultimi Raggi DOCG and ageing in large barrels smoothens out its rich texture. The sweetness of the ripe fruit thus lingers in the fragrance, without any cloying softness on the palate. After ageing in the bottle, Ultimi Raggi becomes the wine with the highest alcohol content of our production, while losing none of the freshness and mouthfeel of Nebbiolo from the Alps.

At 370 metres above sea level, the vineyard extends towards the city, over the Ca’ Bianca district, where the terraces have dry-stone walls in excess of 7 metres. When the considerable temperature variations in the autumn begin to form the aromatic profile of the grapes, the skin becomes thicker and the mineral salts come together. We need the right level of acidity to create the Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Buon Consiglio DOCG. Long maceration times in wooden vats, even over 100 days if necessary, in large barrels for up to 60 months, or even more – in other words, for the right waiting time, in silence, in the dark, in the Burgundy bottle. It will surprise you as you drink it on a late summer’s evening, taking your mind back to your holiday by the sea. Citrus notes, freshness and smooth, soft silk... a cello concerto and the white noise of a distant glacier.

The church of Sant’Antonio a Montagna in Valtellina lies to the east of Rocca De Piro. For centuries, it has protected from on high the vineyards that stretch down along the Risc di Sassina, one of the most generous areas of the Grumello, 450 metres above sea level.
Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Sant’Antonio DOCG is brough to life by its long maceration and malolactic fermentation with skin contact. Cuddled and cared for like a child by a generous, resolute mother, it matures in large barrels of chestnut wood. Like the church of Sant’Antonio, Giovanna, our mother, looks out at dawn every morning from her terrace to make sure the wine growers are taking proper care of these marvels. She decided to marry Arturo in that church on 4 September 1969 and, 40 years later, the amazing 2009 vintage meant we could celebrate the anniversary with the birth of a new wine brought up to appreciate the art of patience – a virtuoso who knows when the time has come to perform a solo.

Dante’s Sixth Canto describes the punishments inflicted on gluttons. The landscape is flailed by eternal rain and Cerberus barks horribly, baring his teeth, but Virgil silences him by filling his mouth with earth. Here we are in the third circle, just as our vineyard, 450 metres above sea level, is on the third curve of the road known as the “Inferno Circuit”. A circuit that saw Arturo many times racing, in the Valtellina Cup Rally. This was his other great passion and it inspired him to dream of an Inferno Riserva that would celebrate the power, the roaring sound and the discordant growl of a harsh land that leaves one speechless. In 2009 we decided that the time had come to make his dream come true: Valtellina Superiore Inferno Riserva Sesto Canto DOCG. An amazing vintage, with scratchy tannins, and long ageing in chestnut barrels has given us a impressive wine with the powerful feel of a solemn canto.
